The First desktop chipset which supported DDR3 was Intel's P35-chipset. Other chipset which supports this new memory technology are Intel's X38 and X48 chipsets. AMD doesn't have platform which supports DDR3 yet, but AMDs upcoming AM3 platform will be published next year and it will support DDR3. Memory markets have maybe the most competition spirited part of the computer industry and every manufacturer want to stay ahead of their competitor by using newer technology than them. An Organisation called JEDEC specifies memory chips voltage, speed, communication protocols, memory latencys and takes care of memory standards. When comparing DDR2 and DDR3 memory standards it's easy to spot a few things which are better in DDR3 than DDR2 like a lower voltage level which is only 1.5V when it's 1.8V with DDR2 and 2.5V with DDR. The DDR3 memory standard promises better performance and better energy effiency. Roundup contenders:
