We were planning to do a DDR3 roundup for a long time, using 2x1GB DDR3 overclocking kits that are widely available in retail. Unfortunately we only received 4 kits for testing from four manufacturers which are very popular around world. Originally ten manufacturers promised to send us kits for tests, but some of them just cancelled or told us that their products aren't ready. That ain't really a problem because all kits which are labelled as PC12800 or DDR3 1600MHz, and mainly use same Micron D9GTR chips.
The First desktop chipset which supported DDR3 was Intel's P35-chipset. Other chipset which supports this new memory technology are Intel's X38 and X48 chipsets. AMD doesn't have platform which supports DDR3 yet, but AMDs upcoming AM3 platform will be published next year and it will support DDR3.
Memory markets have maybe the most competition spirited part of the computer industry and every manufacturer want to stay ahead of their competitor by using newer technology than them. An Organisation called JEDEC specifies memory chips voltage, speed, communication protocols, memory latencys and takes care of memory standards. When comparing DDR2 and DDR3 memory standards it's easy to spot a few things which are better in DDR3 than DDR2 like a lower voltage level which is only 1.5V when it's 1.8V with DDR2 and 2.5V with DDR. The DDR3 memory standard promises better performance and better energy effiency.
